Usage Instructions

View and edit PDF document properties in your browser

Use this tool to see what information is stored inside a PDF—such as author name, title, or creation date—and update it before you share or archive the file. Processing stays on your device; nothing is uploaded.

Common uses

  • Remove your name or company from a resume or report before sending
  • Set a clear title and keywords so files are easier to find later
  • Clear document properties before posting a PDF online or submitting homework
  • Match the title to the file name for consistent filing

  2. Review and edit — On the right, check Title, Author, Subject, and Keywords. Adjust Creation date and Modification date if needed. Open Advanced to see Creator, Producer, and whether extra metadata (XMP) may be present.
  3. Optional shortcuts
    • Generate title from filename — Builds a title from the file name (for example `2026-Sales-Report.pdf` → `2026 Sales Report`).
    • Clear all metadata — Clears the listed properties after you confirm. Use Reset to undo edits before downloading.
  4. Download — Click Download PDF. By default the file is saved as `{original name}_metadata.pdf`. Turn on Rename download file using title to use the Title field as the file name instead.

FAQ

Q: How do I edit PDF metadata?

A: Upload one PDF (drag and drop or click to select). The tool reads document properties and shows them on the right. Edit fields such as title, author, subject, keywords, and dates as needed. Optionally use Generate title from filename or Clear all metadata. Click Download PDF to save a new file. Your original file is not changed.

Q: What can this tool change?

A: You can view and edit these common document properties: Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creation date, and Modification date. Creator and Producer are shown for reference in Advanced; Clear all metadata removes them along with the editable fields. Page content (text, images, layout) is not modified.

Q: What does Clear all metadata do?

A: It clears the common document properties listed in the form, including Creator and Producer when possible. Use it before sharing a resume, contract, or paper if you want to remove names, software names, or dates stored in standard PDF properties. You can review the fields before downloading.

Q: Does this remove every hidden detail in a PDF?

A: This tool updates standard document properties (what most PDF readers show under File → Properties or Document properties). Some PDFs also store extra information in an advanced metadata layer (XMP). If detected, the tool shows a notice but does not edit that layer in this version. For sensitive files, check the downloaded file in your PDF reader after editing.

Q: Will the PDF pages or text change?

A: No. Unlike a PDF compressor that rebuilds pages as images, this tool only updates document properties. Text remains selectable, and page layout stays the same.

Q: What file can I upload, and what do I get back?

A: Input: one PDF file, up to 100 MB. Output: a new PDF downloaded to your device. The default filename adds _metadata before .pdf (for example report_metadata.pdf). You can turn on Rename download file using title to name the file from the Title field instead.

Q: Are my PDFs uploaded to a server?

A: No. Reading and editing run entirely in your browser on your device. Files are not sent to ToolGee or any third party.

Q: What are the limits?

A: One PDF at a time. Maximum file size is 100 MB. Very large files may take longer or use more browser memory; if the page warns you, try closing other tabs or using a desktop browser.

Q: Why did processing fail?

A: Common reasons: the PDF is password-protected (unlock it first), the file is damaged or not a valid PDF, or the browser ran out of memory on a very large file. Close other tabs and try again on a desktop browser if needed.

Q: How is this different from PDF Compressor on ToolGee?

A: PDF Metadata Editor changes document properties only; page content stays the same. PDF Compressor reduces file size by rebuilding pages as compressed images, which usually removes selectable text. Use this tool to fix titles or remove author info; use Compressor when you need a smaller file.
