Formulas
- Volumetric weight = L × W × H × qty ÷ volumetric factor
- Actual total = unit actual weight × qty (skipped if actual weight is empty)
- Chargeable weight = max(actual total, volumetric) (dimensions only → chargeable equals volumetric)
Metric example: 50 × 40 × 30 ÷ 5000 = 12 kg. With 5 kg actual and qty 1, chargeable weight is 12 kg.

- Q: What is volumetric / dimensional (DIM) weight?
A: Volumetric weight (dimensional / DIM weight) is a carrier pricing method based on package size. Formula: volumetric weight = length × width × height × quantity ÷ volumetric factor (quantity is 1 for a single piece). Chargeable weight is the greater of that row’s total actual weight and volumetric weight.
- Q: Which volumetric factor should I use?
A: Common metric factors: 5000 for international express (cm/kg), 6000 for air/postal, 8000 for some economy lanes. Imperial: 139 for UPS/FedEx US (in/lb), 166 USPS international, 194 USPS domestic. Always confirm with your carrier; you can also enter a custom factor.
- Q: What if units and volumetric factor do not match?
A: When you switch unit system between metric (cm/kg) and imperial (in/lb), the factor list shows presets that match the current system (custom is always available). If a custom factor does not match cm/kg or in/lb practice, results may differ from your carrier—verify manually.
- Q: Is my data uploaded or saved?
A: All math runs locally in your browser. Package dimensions and weights are never uploaded. Only unit system, volumetric factor, round-up, and custom factor input may be saved in localStorage on this device; package card fields (dimensions, actual weight, names) are not stored. Use Reset settings (top right) or clear site data in your browser.
- Q: How do I calculate multiple packages?
A: You start with one package card. Click Add a package for more rows. When at least one row has a valid result, totals appear below the list (sum of each row’s volumetric, actual, and chargeable weights). Change the volumetric factor to compare the same shipment under different rules.
- Q: What does round-up mean?
A: The default is no round-up. Some carriers round volumetric or billable weight up—choose round up to 1, to 0.5, or none to see the raw result.
